firstly; i want to say that problem solving method develops the critical and creative thinking.
also , with the help of the PS method, the students may have the ownership of the lecture or problem. and this motivates students to learn.
PS develops mathematical thinking.
students and teachers become learning partners and they get experiences when they are solving the problem. ps leads both students and teachers to brainstorming. it increases the cooperative learning.
students ideas get value with the help of this method( whether they are correct or not).
Posted: Mon Mar 27, 2006 8:56 pm Post subject: disadvantages(knowledge)
as like as many things PS has both advantages and disadvantages. one disadvantage is application of PS is too hard for every subject. it needs a good planning and every day it is not easy to make daily plans according to problem solving. also some subjects' content is not available to use PS method. and discussion part is very important. if teacher is not enough to lead discussion there will be many misunderstandings in students brains. besides these disadvantages; the affective way of students is very important. sometimes many students do not want to participate the PS method and if there is a such situation this method will be forbidding. and if a student give a wrong answer and teacher can not direct him or whole class it will be very harmful for everything. the student's desire whose answer is wrong will be decrease.

In problem solving method students will be able to solve problems mathematically. different strategies can be applied to problem solving process. I aggreed with ayse that she said it develops and increases the critical and creative thinking. Good selected problems give students the chance to realize their knowledge and to stimulate new learning. it leads the students to work with in groups.

When we use problem solving method in the lesson there are many advantages. Firstly, problem solving method is a part of discovery learning. This encourage students’ critical thinking, flexibility, creativity and individual's decision-making powers. Develop students general problem solving skills mathematical thinking. When participating problem solving method in a group, individuals can learn alternative viewpoints. This group working can develop studetns cooperative skills. For teachers . If we arrange needed reseources and arrange time clearly, problem solving is a method which can be used in most subject.

Problem solving method has many advantages if a teacher can use the method effectively.
A teacher can gain students attention with PS, teachers can take the attention in the main points of the subject or common misunderstandings of the subject. so they can reinforce learning with PS.
PS increase mathematical and critical thinking skills and this increases learning. students can develop their creativity and develop their own way which goes to the answer. by this way every student can understand the lesson. because, there is no one way to reach the rigth answer. teacher should give chance to students to develop their own method for problems.
Teachers can give responsibility to students with PS so they engage in the learning process.

to hsynisik's message Posted: Mon Mar 27, 2006 5:47 pm
Problem solving enhances mathematical ability and power. To learn only concepts and formulas without using them will not be so interesting. Students may think that Maths includes only formulas that we are not need or that are not used in daily life. To make it more concrete, valuable, and understandable, an application part is need which is one of the advantages of PS. Therefore, problem solving can be thought as the partial application part or comprehension part of Math.
For example, students may think why they learn negative integers.
Is there really negatives in our lifes, or we only imagine such numbers? The teacher can teach them that "To add a negative number to a positive number means subtracting the second one from the first one, i.e., (a)+(-b) can be calculated as (a-b).
To make it more concrete, it can be said that "Think that you have 5 apples. If you gave 2 of them to your friend how many apple you would have?"
Posted: Tue Mar 28, 2006 4:24 pm Post subject: teaching students to think(evaluation)
PS is a major theme of doing maths and "teaching students to think" is primary goal of PS.So I want to write about only this advantage of PS.
After solving a problem students must discuss their ideas with the class so they must know why they solved the problem by that method ,they should be able to know the steps of their method so they can discuss their solution method in the class. And in this way they began to think about the process when they are solving a problem because they know memorizing a solution method of prior problems won't help them.

of course there are many advantages of problem solving method. first of all I can say its one of the most imporatant advantages is that of focus.
we know the problem and we need to show effort to define a problem but thanks to problem solving we will know where we are looking.
one of the advantages of ps is that we know the 'value' that will be acquired by solving the problem. We know the value of being without a headache. We know the value of removing the stone from our shoe.

I agree to Ayseses in the point that problem solving helps to development of critical and creative thinking. Also, it helps to improve the understanding and reasoning level. However, we should use problem solving activity correctly. For example; we should not begin our lesson by a very complex example. Firstly, we can give the basic example. Students try to understand the main idea of the problem and the subject. Then, they can build new ideas on to existing ones and they can connect them. I can consider time limitation as an only disadvantage of the problem solving because teacher needs a lot of time to apply PS. Not only in the lesson, has it also taken a lot of time during the preparation of the plan. I do not agree to Ayseses about some subjects' content is not available to use PS method. We can apply PS every time but teacher should be dominant on the subject. If teacher do not know the subject well, s/he cannot apply PS effectively and sometimes can cause to misleading.

My friend mentioned about the time limitations for PS. She wrote that teacher needs a lot of time to apply PS. Also, planning for the PS section takes lots of time, because you have to select appropriate questions for your student. Therefore, you have to know your students very well. You try to estimate which question is hard to which students, what are their needs to overcome the problem... Teachers have to be careful in the plaaning process. They have to organize the lesson efficiently. By doing these, they will overcome the time limitation of PS.

I agree with hilal that problem solving method, besides its disadvantages has also many advantages. The first advantage that comes to my mind is that it avoids just learning the theoretic part of the topic and provides students with practice of the knowledge they have acquired.Even depending to the poblem solved,in fact, most of the problems solved in class are related with the real life. For instance, price problems,if the price of some goods is such and such $'s then what becomes to the price if it is 20% off sale.In such problems, students have learned for example the topic of fructions and dealing with percentages and with PS method the teacher encourages his/her students to internalize the topic or understand but not memorize the formulas and definitions.
As hilal said using PS method also develops the creativity of the students to solve the problem in different ways.As I said before in the other disscussions, there is not only one way to go to Ankara from Istanbul. We also can develop the the level of mathematical and critical thinking of our students and this will in turn result in effective learning.

As all my friends said, there are many advantages of problem solving such as creativity, critical thinking, flexibility, cooperative skill,...I want to mention the motivation of students. I believe that when a teacher use PS method, s/he can motivate students easily since in PS method students are active. Therefore students listen others carefully and they want to participate the discussion. For example, in math lesson, a teacher makes students to solve a problem so ask the question to all students and wait for a while. All students think about question and then they start a discussion.By the way, teacher makes all students participate the lesson. I think it is very effective method
Posted: Wed Mar 29, 2006 2:12 pm Post subject: Disadvantages of PS(comprehension, application)
Problem solving is effective method but if it isn't planned properly, it becomes a failed method. For instance a teacher want to use PS in his/her lesson, however s/he doesn't prepare so s/he can't guide students to reach right solutions. Therefore students can't understand anything At this time lecturing method is more effective than PS.

We can say that problem solving has a lot of advantages, if it is used properly. As all my friends said PS push students to think about something. Thinking process is very important for students and this is a concept of constructivism. Students try to solve problems with the help of prior knowledge by themselves. We can also say that PS is significant for mathematics because subjects are more clear and understandable thanks to the PS. On the other hand, we should use PS effectively or properly. For instance, we begin easy problem and then complex one at PS session. Also, we should guide and sometimes help students at PS because they can make mistake, and this can be cause misconception or misleading. At this point I agree with gulenulusoy. Another important point of PS is that it is an application process I think PS can be more attractive then theoretical part of a lesson for students.
In conclusion, PS is crucial for lesson especially math lesson, if we use or apply it effectively.
