To add to the having officers elected by cross campus and open to all students I'd like to add that we currently have a very good Home Students' Officer yet she is no longer a home student. (There likely will be a Home Students' Association in future.) If liberation officers were restricted but not representation non-sabbs it would be a bit hypocritical.
Also personal politics aside what is the difference between restricting officers and religious societies restricting leadership who consider themselves of that religion (not relevent to BUECU as they made leaders sign a doctrinal basis whereas association membership is based on self definition not proving you fit that category)? There would be uproar if one tried but it would be no different and I'm sure given the precedent by exec say the Islamic Society would be quite pleased to know that a future Richard Morris would be unable to stand for society president (even if they wouldn't win in practice). Thus I feel that the current system is the most sensible and only consistent one and in practice someone of the relevent category would be far more likely to win, unless like Laura Sadler they are nevertheless a strong candidate. We let Rich Morris run for women's officer but there was never a risk of him winning. |

i dont understand why challenging the sterotypes that are supposed to be in office for example a woman has to be in the womans officer position. I think that a person who was male would be in jsut as good a position to do the job (if they did it seriously) than any woman. Also demonstrated by disabled students officer - why should a person without disabilities be looked on unfairly for running for the position in the first place?
Realisign thats slightly off topic but just something i had on my mind .... |
