Er... off the top of my head:
Best Society: BUDS (Birmingham University Dance Squad)
Best/Most Improved Standing Society: GTV
Best National/Regional Achievement: LGBT (for their "Stamp out homophobia in schools" campaign)
Don't remember the rest. I think Watch This won something too, maybe Best New Society. |

The Guild doesn't really seem to like keeping things on record (things like student group award winners, or less important things like which motions were passed at Guild Council), so my guess is no-one can tell you for sure unless they have one hell of a memory. But I reckon there's something going on anyway, as P&P have never won best website, despite the fact that, erm, we have the best website (for which the praise must go to the famed doc_ido of The Radish). Check it out: it changes colour with the seasons and everything!

The results were posted on the BUGS website, but they seem to have vanished and aren't in the archives either. You could perhaps scour the Wayback Machine for them if you're really interested, or start harrassing the appropriate Exec member (VPFS? I'm not sure who's remit it is).
Last year, SAPSoc won best website, a clear case of style over substance as anyone who read the P&P submission would know. _________________ We cannot choose what we are. Yet what are we, but the sum of our choices? |

I have to agree about P&P having the best website, it has more info on me than hte guild one, which is yet to post the 250 word profile I was told to write at the start of term.
I'm not surprised they don't have it up who won, it took long enough getting the prize money off them. |

| Quote: | Known factions in the Guild (at the time of writing) are:
Exec
The Executive Committee isn't a faction as such, as its members tend not to share the same ideologies. However, it functions as a single unit and its members will rarely stray from the party line (usually set down by the President). In the Guild, what the Exec says pretty much goes - which makes "Team Exec" the dominant political force.
Hacks
Hacks are factions usually consisting entirely of one person, who happens to have a disturbing knowledge of Guild rules and the Constitution. These people have their axes to grind, but are generally ignored unless they are on a committee. They will often become Independent Chairs.
Independent Chairs
I-Soc
The Islamic Society's influence has declined in recent years due to prominent members graduating. I-Soc's principal issues to raise in the Guild were those of Palestine and the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. They succeeded in getting members elected to NUS Conference, but the election had to be re-held after the J-Soc faction lobbied with allegations of vote-fixing.
J-Soc
The Jewish Society has a history of getting members or sympathisers elected onto Exec and the Committee of Independent Chairs, but is not as fundamentalist as it once was. J-Soc is probably the most powerful faction at the time of writing, and continues to promote the Israeli side of the Israel/Palestine conflict in Redbrick.
LGBT (Exec)
Not to be confused with the LGBT Association, the Exec LGBT faction consists of a few people who use the LGBT argument to push their own agendas. This was demonstrated in autumn 2005, when the National Blood Service were banned from Fresher's Fair against the wishes of the LGBT. The appointment of the LGBTO may undermine this faction somewhat.
New Labour
Several prominent Exec members for the past few years have been heavily involved in the student Labour movement, resulting in preferential access for Labour members and policies. This increases the difficulty of doing things that Labour disapprove of, for example anti-war activities.
The Radish
The Radish is a collective term used to describe students who criticise the way the Guild is run (usually on the unofficial University message boards), often without offering better solutions. It is not a faction in the same way as the others, as there is little collective ideology. Exec members are often at odds with Radish sympathisers due to the challenge to their power.

love it! I didnt know exec lgbt were that strong since Angell left, i suppose that leaves just Gary in that faction! I also think the whole attitutdes to hacks is amazing - there out with an axe to grind - I hope I dont get on the wrong side of peter Lloyd! (love you really pete!)
And new labour! as if this 'faction' doesnt have anyone who might class themselves as old labour! Also can i point out that these 'new labour' people actually passed policy in the BUGS labour club opposing the war in Iraq. also should point out about jsoc, they dont support Israel in GC, they support a no-policy position, that racking our brains here in the guild and debating it into the small hours isn't going to help anyone on the issue! i love how the describtion of the radish faction is self deprecating aswell, it claims you criticise without offering solutions!

| Quote: | and James before him, Gary came from the New Labour / LGBT stable and won his election against a P&P sympathiser. During his election campaign he lost most of the P&P vote with his claim that students live in poverty, forgetting that most P&P-ers had actually been out to the poor world and seen real poverty first-hand.
Gary was reasonably active on the unofficial University message boards (The Radish), but disappeared after a P&P-er used one of his own arguments against him.
2005 - 2006: Richard Angell
Most P&P-ers were suspicious of Richard from the start - partly due to him winning the election against an ardent P&P enthusiast, and partly due to his support for the Labour party during the 2001-2005 term (defined, like it or not, by the invasion of Iraq). His term of office got off to a hugely controversial start when the National Blood Service were banned from recruiting at the Freshers Fair, ostensibly in support of the LGBT (who were not consulted and spoke out against it).
During the Coca-Cola campaign, Richard was very strongly on the side of maintaining the exclusive contract and helped defeat P&P's motion to Guild Council. Although his stance on Nestlé won him universal scorn in campaigning circles, he was respected for being at least reasonably politically active.
Richard's leaving speech in 2006 was, typically, used as a political platform. Look out for him standing in a constituency near you.

great stuff! its funny how we haven't seen scruffy in a long time! also he lost the p&p vote after claiming students live in poverty. I bet he kicked himself after that!
as for a constituency near u- he already represents you on the NUS NEC! Incidentally the ardent P&P enthusaist who Angell beat came back the following year and campaigned for Gary! |

For you information Higuy, that was written before the end of the summer term by a P&Per who's no longer at the guild. This was before Angell left, before Gary took over.
| Quote: | | great stuff! its funny how we haven't seen scruffy in a long time! |
It was also at a time when Gary was not posting on the message boards. He never posted all summer, only resuming in September or something.
| Quote: | | also he lost the p&p vote after claiming students live in poverty. I bet he kicked himself after that! |
Oh so we're not a big constituency, but Gary was annoyed we never talked to him or gave him a chance, but when he came out with those kind of statements, is it any wonder?

As I have been arguing on facebook, GCers and Guildy people need to be aware of how they are peceived, step outside yourself for a minute.
| Quote: | | as for a constituency near u- he already represents you on the NUS NEC |
I don't recall him asking for my views recently.
| Quote: | | i love how the describtion of the radish faction is self deprecating aswell, it claims you criticise without offering solutions! |
Radish isn't P&Pers, many "Radishers" aren't P&Pers, and even more so vice versa.

Surely John Wright standing was the main reason as I can't have seen P&Pers voting for Rich Morris or even Damian even with that statement, and I can't imagine many voting against John without it.
Surely BALDSoc get a mention if it was last year, we played a significant part at GC, even if it rarely achieved anything. |

| As I've pointed out to Jules a lot of the observational humour is now well out of date. But funny for us oldies who've been at uni now since 2003 |

This is partly because BaldSoc were a 2005/2006 phenomenon, the author wasn't sad enough to be studying Guild factions during his final year. _________________ Big Brother is watching YOU! |

| Wow Higuy, that's really clever, you pretended you liked the comments on the website in order to expose them for the lunacy they really were - that's humour! Of course, the comments were written by a man who was at the Uni when you were in short trousers, and so he might have a perspective on things that maybe doesn't apply this year, especially since he graduated last year. And of course, the comments made in the handbook, which was written by only one person, and which you happen to disagree with, entirely negate the fact that the website itself, in terms of information, layout and general expertise, is far better than any other student one I've seen. If you've seen a better website (ie. not just a website you agree with more), please let me know. |

I think the P&P website is very impressive, both in design and in its level of detail.
There's such a wealth of information in the Campaign Handbook, but it's hidden way down at the bottom of the sidebar and it took me ages to find the sections higuy was quoting. It's not clear that it's a separate, deep and useful section of the website, and not just another single page. Might be worth making it more prominent?
It could more easily be kept up to date if all the information were moved into a wiki system. It'd be a bit of an a**e to set up but after that it'd be very ismple to update and it could be more of a collaborative effort. To police it, you could easily use one which requires a moderator to check changes before they are applied. |
