Hi,

I'm a first year Commerce student. Around the 4th May or so we were told that 2 of our 8 exams had been cancelled because of the strike. Now, all of a sudden, just days before all our other exams finish, they write to us saying that those two have merely been "postponed" and are due to take place either with the August resits or during the first term of next year.

As you can imagine, this has caused a "student uprising" and we're planning on taking action to ensure that these unfair measures are not carried out.

I'd like to know to whom we should resort to seek Guild support. I really have no idea...

Thanks!!

VPE Education: Ben Furgeson (i think i have mispelt his name)

as it will continue into next year notifying the incoming VP AQA Peter Mason would also be wise.

Good idea. In fact, maybe we can mobilise the rest of the student population and get rid of all the other exams too. After that, we can move onto coursework, then practicals and then lectures. Within a decade we should have a system where someone can go to Uni for three years and get a degree without ever doing any work!

I'd quite like for my exams to be put back for a few months personally Sad Better than going off today for it anyway.

Don't really see the big deal with this. You've got a lot longer to revise and you would have had to do them anyway.

To be fair, it'snot the exams that silvia has a problem with, I think tis more the department/uni pissing about and telling they were cancelled and then they were postponed. As for getting rid of exams, yes! I mean they're just useless especially for arty subjects, coursework is such a better indicator of knowledge, intelligence, ability and work put in.

The issue being that if it's in summer you might need to do something else you can't then (like work if you need the money or go to your parents if you're an international student). If they're in the first term back it gets in the way of your other studies harming them which count towards your degree.

I like exams because for me they're easy. Especially in Psychology when they're based on 10 lectures each and you then get to choose questions anyway.

It's a shame that you view our cause in this manner. I can assure you that this is not simply the case of students not wanting to do any work - there are many factors which have led us to take the stance we have chosen to take. As much as I would love to outline them here just now, I'll have to leave that for later since I've got some studying I have to do. As soon as I'm done with studying though, I'll be sure to expose the details of our situation and the factors that have led us to take this stance here. Perhaps then, after understanding all the facts, you will, if not support us, at least respect our decision.

To be fair Silvia I think that he was joking, that old English humour that you haven't quite mastered yet. At least I hope it is! And I can't imagine how you feel cos you live so far away and would either have to fork out loads of cash to come back here or do it in Brazil which will be a real hassle.

I second this... the sentiment anyway. Silvia, I'll look forward to hearing your point of view on it. But for the moment, I must say, is there no room for human error any more? Universities are still run by human beings, and they make mistakes... and like someone else said, at least you will have ages to do your exams. It's not that big a deal.

It is if you live in Brazil and are going back there. And I am sure that you have been annoyed at some sort of human error before! Lol.

Knowing the business school, theyve probably f**k up and are screwing people around.
Its what theyre best at.
I don't think Silvia and her friends are calling for complete cancellation of exams; rather that they have been given one bit of information and then a conflicting information.
International students have to take august exams in the british embassy in the capital of their home country. In Silvias case, Brazil is a prettttyyy big place.
Home students have to resit in Birmingham - if they are overseas doing camp america etc they either have to cancel that or fail the module.
