Yeah maybe we should take the underage sex out of Romeo and Juliet in case some kiddy-fiddler gets the wrong idea. Once I heard there was murder in a book too!

Yeah I mean obviously that's what I was arguing for, complete censorship of anything that isn't about lambs gambolling in the fields. I mean, it's not like American Psycho, Silence of the Lambs etc are some of my favourite books or anything. Once I heard there was an idiot on a messageboard!

Shockingly I already have that book .... in fact I have the same story with the 2 different titles ...

I pretty much own the whole collection was hoping to move beyond Agatha Christie to otehr crime thrillers and writers

Any ideas?

Btw, to answer this original question... P. D. James is great and one of my favourite writers. Also, try Ruth Rendall and Ellis Peters. And Grisham's a staple airport fodder classic. But bear in mind these are on a different plane from Christie, who is kind of like the Enid Blyton of crime novels. Very Happy

That's my point - you are picking what personally offends you and saying noone else should be allowed to choose to read it - which if you extend it would probably result in some very empty libraries...

Lol I loved it too! But it is racist, in ways much worse than the title. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't love it (there's plenty of people who are racist who I love too!), and it doesn't mean we should cowtow to the PC brigade who go around editing our very lives, we can beat them!

Lots of books are racist and sexist and downright wrong. Choosing what to censor is very hard and no-one will be satisfied everytime.

Round The World In 80 Days is a bit boring. So I will be looking for another book in this house. We need more!

"Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behaviour" by Kate Fox

It's so cool!! The introduction is a little boring at first but if you hang on there it will become super interesting... she talks about anthropology and many interesting things relating to that... but it's not overly academic... it's like she's chatting to you in in the pub over a few drinks. I bought it in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport yesterday on my way to Bham and I read it all the way during the flight!! it was extra entertaining it was

Then, as expected, she starts talking about the weather... about "Weather-talk": i.e., the English obsession in talking about the weather... but she says i't's not because you guys actually find it fascinating, if not because you find it hard to initiate a conversation so talking about a neutral subject, of which everyone knows about, like the weather, is a perfecct solution. But she goes into more depth (for example, the acceptance rule says that you have to agree with the othe"r person's comment on the weather or you'll be seen as acting hostile. If they say "it's cold isn't it?", never reply "no, it's quite mild". Say something like "yes,... but you know, I don't tend to notice the cold too much - this feels quite warm to me"... it's a contradiction... but it's etiquette over logic... almost always.

There are chapters on: the weather, grooming-talk, humour rules, the mobile phone, pub-talk, rules of play, dress codes, food rules, rules of sex, rules of the road, and much more!

I just finished the second chapter on grooming-talk... ' The cover is a nice green colour... a guy holding an umbrella for an eldery woman as she reads her copy of The Daily Telegraph in a football stadium (I suppose it's football...). Quite comical... sorry, but I guess i still judge books by their cover (sometimes hehehe)11. But i was right with this one!

It's seriously fascinating! Both to foreigners and English people alike I guess... I bought it so that I could understand you guys better but it turns out it's been a great laugh as I notice that many of the things she says are true!! Wink

Have a read yourselves... you'll like it i'm positive

xxx

My housemate's boyfriend is reading "Empire - the Islamic Occupation of Wales". Apparently it is a "chiller tale set in the near future" where Wales is a frontier province of the Islamic empire, and the hero "Alun Jones" (I kid you not) battles against the corrupt Muslim regime.

Think I'll give it a miss.

Surely its freedom to express? we learn more by hearing everyones view rather than restrict it beyond belief?

And the question is when do you stop restricting - where is the line?????

So we pretty much agree then. Censorship is a tricky issue.

I don't think censorship should happen at all it is an evasive intrusion upon a basic human right of the freedom of expression. Noone should be able to intrude on such a right we should be able to weigh up for ourselves by seeing all the information and opinions.....

Like I said before censorship should not happen and if it were allowed where would the government like to start and where could it possibly end. We should be able to find out for ourselves not have others to it for us and to restrict the information and the forms of expression that we see. Who is to say what views should be heard and what should be expressed? Clearly it should not occur... abuse would endure.

So if someone wrote a book like Mein Kampf but about Muslims/any other group of people, NOW, and tried to publish it, you'd let that happen? As in a mainstream publisher.

I don't know where I stand about censorship. But I do wonder if it would be good to stop the media hounding certain celebs and revealing stuff about them that no-one really has the right to know. But I say again that I don't really know where I stand on the issue.
