One of Italy's top 'keepers is an open fascist, cant remember which one tho...

Swathes of Lazio's fans, the Irriducibili, are openly fascist. Paolo Di Canio (remember him from West Ham?) gave a fascist salute to the home fans after scoring against Roma in the 2005 Rome derby.

Mussolini was a fan of Lazio, also Di Canio has 'Duce' in latin tattooed on his arm!! charming.

apparently he made the same salute to Livorno fans whos ultra group are known as communists.

This little piece from the evr excellent Schnews seems to sum up a few of the contradictions within Chavez's Venezuala.

Quote:

CHRISTMAS CARRACAS

SchNEWS' favourite authoritarian socialist, Hugo 'Ok I'm not
perfect but I'm giving it a good go and pissing off the Americans'
Chavez, was comfortably re-elected as President of Venezuela last
Sunday, picking up almost two thirds of the vote. The election was
not jiggery pokery free though; reminiscing about the
business-friendly coup back in 2002, Rafael Poleo, a prominent
opposition journalist and businessman, promised that a call would
be made to the military high command to "decide if it is going to
continue forcing the Venezuelan opposition to put up with an
embarrassing regime." i.e. Forget democracy , can't we just get
our guns out? The threat fell largely on deaf ears though, and
people (less apathetic than here) queued all night to cast their
votes, promising more welcome years of continued opposition to
neoliberalism, from a state that supplies one fifth of US oil
imports.

So, earlier in the week Fiji saw its fourth military coup in 20 years. Frank Bananarama (yes, I know thats not correct) the military chief has seized power from the government, claiming that they hadnt done enough to sort out the issues resulting from the 2000 coup, in which Bananarama helped Qarase (the PM) into power after a racially motivated coup which was started by a businessman.

Now, a bit of background. Fiji is about have indigenous Fijian, half Indian. In the lovely days of the Empire, the Brits shipped the Indians over to work on the sugar plantations. Now its a bit different - the Indians are the more wealthy of the two groups, and whilst relations are usually good, sometimes, as in now, they aren't. For example, one of the parlimentary bills that sparked this all off was one about restoring seabed ownership to native fijians, meaning that the indians (or NZers or Aussies) would find it harder to develop hotels there.

But that isnt really the key issue here. Bananarama has placed the govt under house arrest (they were democratically elected earlier this year) and NZ, Australia, the US, EU and the UK have all withdrawn aid to the country in protest at this. But China have said they may fill the gap. This is all very well, but considering the economic situation is very fragile, this is totally going to screw the country and the people over, not Bananarama and chums. Yup, the EU and US subsidise sugar growing there (a big export) and tourism is the only other big industry. And suprisingly enough, that is declining too!

So, seems as though its a no win situation. Either continue the aid and encourage martial law, or pull it and screw over the innocent citizens.

One thing did cheer me up though, that reports suggest that nearly the entire labour party is unhappy at his actions and the government's support for Israel Pity they wont do anything about it!

                                      Hi All

The U8 group at Birmingham has organised a speaker event at the Guild Chambers on Friday 9th of June from 5pm to 7pm.

There will be some really influential speakers present including:

Michael Norton OBE: Founder of CIVA and the Directory for Social Change and author of '365 ways to change the world'
Andrew Mitchell MP: Dhadow Secretary of State for International Development
Dr Hany El-Banna OBE: Founder and President of Islamic Relief an influential INGO.

They will each give a presentation and then there will be a chance for you to ask any questions and for a lievly debate to open up.

The topic is loosely based on the future of International Development: one year on from Make Poverty History - but it is the perfect opportunity for you to ask any questions or raise any issues that you feel are important.

Would be great to see as many people there as possible - please contact me for any further information.

Needless to say I'm happy with the decision that was taken. Interestingly reports say that none of the jurors took the "he wants to be a martyr, lets not let him" view, it was purely that they didn't consider he played enough of a part in the plot to justify it.

There's a good article in todays Independent about the Innocence Project, a non-profit organisation which works to exonerate wrongly convicted and in some cases wrongly executed prisoners. Interesting point made that even in Texas, when it becomes clear they have executed an innocent man attitudes tend to soften and the article is optimistic on the political tide turning against it in the US. Good quote from a candidate running for Texas governor; One of his campaign slogans is "Texas: 50th in education, first in executions... how's that working for you?"

A study published 2 years ago by Goldman Sachs (an investment bank) predicted that in half a century China will be the biggest economy in the world with a GDP of US$ 44 trillion. The USA will come second and India third, followed by Japan, Brazil and Russia with US$ 7 trillion, US$ 6 trillion and US$ 5.9 trilion respectively.

During the past 3 years, average economic growth p.a. has been as follows (I've sort of rounded them up):
USA - 4%
Europe - 1.8%
Latin America - 4%
Japan - 2%
China - 9.5%

There's no doubt that if this scenario persists for a couple more years, China could, indeed, become the biggest global economy by 2050. As for the USA and the EU turning their back on China and boycotting them, it seems like a silly thing to do. There are many other markets that won't act hostile towards China - Latin America for one - and as someone said, it really would be counter-productive.

Also, as mentioned before, militarily there are still some improvements the Chinese need to make but economically they seem to be prospering amazingly.

From personal experience - and I do know many Chinese - I can say that they have a culture of incredible self-discipline and determination which, I feel, could be a crucial advantage to China in comparison to other nations.
