There's a Neighbours Appreciation Society. There's a fucking Neighbours Appreciation Society. There is. A Neighbours. Appreciation Society. Did you get that?

There.
Is.
A.
Neighbours.
Appreciation.
Society.

It's not some kind of community cohesion project, as I initially assumed. It's about the Australian television programme Neighbours. Y'know, Karl Kennedy, Paul Robinson, Lou Bishop, all that jazz.

How the hell did this get passed at Society Recognition Committee? Can anyone who was at that meeting justify the decision to fund a group to appreciate Neighbours? I appreciate Neighbours whenever I can, but I don't need funding to do it. Hell, I'm even happy to pay for my own teabags.

There's only a certain amount of money in the Guild, and surely the more money that goes to - I'm gonna say it - pointless, unneccesary, joke societies like this, the less that goes into more important things - Guild democracy, campaigning, welfare, societies that have a reason for existing, etc?

So please, can anyone involved in the decision to recognise this group justify it, and explain why they thought it was necessary to fund a joke society?

How much money do they actually get? How many members have they got? We dont know that for starters.

This is the Guild of Students of Birmingham. If 20 people want that society then the Guild exists to facilitate and support that, thats there interest in the way other people are interested in frisbee or DJing. Having diverse societies cant be a bad thing, especially if it engages people.

Although I'm not actually bothered enough about Neighbours soc, this raises an interesting further question about societies: can we find out how much money they get, or is that confidential? I personally think the grant figures for each society should be open and inspectable by anyone, so we can know how and where our money is being spent.

Incidentally at Manchester University's Student Union, societies get a fixed £2.50 for every person they get to sign up. Joining societies is free unless that society chooses to charge.

Ah but steven, then people could whinge about the money we get for campaigning against guild policy (eg coke). Do you really want all the tories and new labourites seeing that we got money Laughing Wink

P.S. Slightly playing devil's advocate here Wink

I don't necessarily speak for the whole of P&P, but I would be happy for our grant information to be available to all.

Well this may be on another thread but what did the politics society set out to do? You cant have debates because we have a debating society for starters. You also have social sciences society to bring together politic students and others for socials.

Additionally I dont think claims of 'Its impartial for those who dont support a political society' really will suffice. What politics really is impartial? Additionally if it was gonna be impartial you wouldnt be able to campaign on any issues, which is a major role other political societies, with the exception of the Tories, have.
