|
|
Dear Coaches:
We are extremely proud to announce the 14th annual Tippecanoe Academic Challenge will be held on November 7th, 2009 at Tippecanoe HS in Tipp City, Ohio.
The tournament will be held according to standard NAQT format, with 10 point tossup questions followed by 30 point bonus questions. Important note: the matches will NOT be timed, but we will be reading 10 tossups in each half round, 20 for a complete match. Bonuses will NOT rebound if not answered by the winning tossup team.
We are using tournament set IS-89A.
Registration will be begin at 8 am on Saturday morning, and rounds will commence promptly at 9 am. If any teams arrive later, then they will forfeit matches until they arrive. Teams will be placed into groups of 8, where they will play everyone in their group in a round-robin. All schools are guaranteed seven matches. Schools will be placed into groups based on a combination of geographic proximity, school size and past TAC performance. After round-robin play is finished, each of the group winners, plus three wildcard teams, will playoff against each other in a single elimination bracket to decide the champion. Teams will be seeded in the elimination rounds based on record, then average points scored per game. Plaques will be awarded for the champion and runner-up schools, and at least the top two schools will qualify for invitations to the NAQT national championship. Possibly more schools will qualify for invitations based on the size of the field.
Tournament fees will be $60 for the first team, and $50 for the second team. There will be no separate JV tournament. “B” teams will simply be separated and placed in different brackets from their “A” teams. Any check received after October 31st will incur a $15 late penalty. Registrations will not be accepted after October 31st. If a school brings a NAQT qualified reader, they will receive a $10 discount. All participating schools MUST bring one working buzzer system that accommodates at least eight players total. Pizza, chips and drinks will be sold in the cafeteria for lunch. Teams will be allowed to purchase whole pizzas or by the slice. Orders will also be taken in advance.
Make checks payable to Tippecanoe High School, and they may be sent to:
Joe Bellas
Academic Quiz Team Advisor
Tippecanoe High School
615 E. Kessler-Cowlesville Road
Tipp City, Ohio 45371
You may either send all registration information for the tournament (School name, team roster, coaches’ name, address, phone, email, fax, and fees owed) to the above address, or you may register by email to jrbellas(AT-no SPAM)tippcity.k12.oh.us. Please respond as soon as possible, since we are capping tournament size at 40 teams (not schools). For schools not familiar where we are located, Tipp City is just north of Dayton, Ohio, and sits directly next to Interstate 75. A number of hotels are available in both Tipp and Troy for those teams staying overnight. I will be sending out another letter with more information to those teams who register by October 24th.
We hope that you all are able to attend our tournament in November. Good luck to all of your teams this academic year! _________________ Joe Bellas

TAC Field Update - Oct. 12th
St. Charles 4 (5)
MVCTC 1
Northmont 1
Fisher Catholic 1
Simon Kenton,KY 1 (2?)
Ben Logan 1
Cedarville 2
South Range 1
Miami East 2
Danville,KY 2
Greenville 1
Northwestern 2
Walnut Hills 2
Thurgood Marshall 2
White Cloud, MI 1
I also have received interest from another half-dozen teams, and Tipp will field an 8th/9th grade hybrid bunch to fill out any uneven brackets. So we are more than halfway home. If you don't see your school's name on here, make sure you contact me ASAP to reserve your spot. I probably will close the field at 40, but may be persuaded to go to 48 only if I can get the readers necessary to keep the show up to par.
The Northeast is conspicuously absent - there is nothing going on this same weekend unless Aurora is also happening (I thought they were Oct. 31st, though). Cincy schools are also underrepresented, but I have received emails from three others that traditionally have come up in the past, so I have high hopes. _________________ Joe Bellas

Bump for field update.
Don't miss your chance to register - I'm already at 25 teams, only 15 spots left. Probably will cut off at 40. _________________ Joe Bellas

Josh knows how to play. He's been coming to practices since his 6th grade year. But he's far from super. He tends to defer to the older kids in the JV practices, especially Max Witeof (freshman).
I'm trying to get him a little more aggressive but no luck so far. _________________ Joe Bellas

There's another Witeof...
wow... so there is future hope in the Tipp program. You have a powerhouse team coming in a year or two or three that you were keeping on the downlow and we've now outed you! _________________ Bob Kilner - Eastlake North HS

Well, we haven't really done anything yet.
Max is raw, and Loooooooves to press his buzzer. His negs are in the neighborhood of spectacular.
I wouldn't worry about Tipp for a while. Nothing to see here, just move along. _________________ Joe Bellas

I understand. Your team might be coming from the farthest away, except for White Cloud.
I was thinking more about the local teams in SW or WC Ohio. _________________ Joe Bellas

We aren't able to send a second team to this one. After band wraps up in November, we will be OK, but until then, no such luck getting enough people.
I hope Butler comes- since they hosted FKT, they should have some money to go to a couple events (they haven't officially registered for either of my events either). _________________ David Jones

Update -
Greenville is bringing a second team. Tipp will probably field two teams (could be more except I'm using 15 of my kids to work the tournament).
Butler is definitely out. So is Culver. So is Troy. So is North White.
Still waiting on the last couple. Currently sitting at 44, I think. _________________ Joe Bellas

How about the Dunbar that's in West Dayton? People would see Dunbar on their schedule and think that they were about to get dominated by Sandy Huang. It kind of reminds me of what happened last year when Sue was almost going to sit out Jackson against Miami Valley because she thought that Copley was about to be playing MVCTC. _________________ Jonathan Graham

I don't think any of the Dayton Public Schools except for Thurgood Marshall even have a team. I've never seen any team, ever, in 15 years of coaching from Dunbar, Meadowdale, or Jefferson Twp. Belmont fielded a team 5-6 years ago on High-Q, but didn't play out in any tournaments.
I'm actually proud that Thurgood Marshall is putting its best foot forward here - they won a match or two last year, if I remember correctly. _________________ Joe Bellas

Who was the team you ventured into Dayton to scrimmage but that refused to come to Tipp because of the "known" racism there? _________________ Bob Kilner - Eastlake North HS

We scrimmaged Thurgood Marshall. They came to Tipp once, maybe 2006, then we went there the next year, then they came back to Tipp the year after that. If someone told you they wouldn't come to Tipp, you were misinformed. They've probably been in our building 4 or 5 times for various tournaments and scrimmages. Nice kids every single one.
When we traveled there a few years ago that school still had its old name- Colonel White. Irony abounds.
By the way, Tipp now has 3-4% African-American students, and double that in hispanic population. We've had a good number of Asian students for around a decade now, running at 4-5%. For some reason, we are now attracting Bosnian and Croatian students, due to some track migration that entered Tipp in the late 90's. We are probably running around 85% US-born white, which is more diverse than many of the schools around us like Bethel, Newton, Milton-Union, and Covington. Not as diverse as Troy, Butler, or Northmont by a long shot. But getting better every year. _________________ Joe Bellas

Thurgood Marshall came to Ohio State last year for FHtE. They are among the best attitudes of any groups of kids (and definitely among the nicest groups of coaches) I have ever met in quiz bowl. I would not be remotely surprised to see them in the top bracket of a tournament near you before too long. _________________ Brian M. Saxton

Yeah, you'll never top our 25 or so % Croatian population at North. Our African-American enrollment is virtually nonexistent (we maybe have 20 African Americans out of 1450 students). I'm not sure where we stand with the Asians and other minorities. _________________ Bob Kilner - Eastlake North HS
