I feel confident enough that the Fall Kickoff Tournament will be finished on schedule, hence this semi-official announcement.

Date: October 3rd.

Sites: Vandalia-Butler, Olmsted Falls, Northwest/South Range, among others (this list will be updated); all coaches in Ohio have been E-mailed and we should hear back from other potential hosts as well.

Format: Tossup/bonus.

Difficulty: IS-level.

Fees: $40 for first team, $30 for second team, $20 for third or more teams.

EDIT: $5 discount per working buzzer set brought, $10 discount total per school.

Miscellaneous: no timed rounds; no JV unless there are so many teams that we have to have a JV division.

PM me if you have any concerns/questions. I am also open to all suggestions.

I'm sure that if someone in West Virginia wanted to mirror this then it wouldn't be a problem. I don't think we're trying to keep this exclusively Ohio based or anything.

Confirmed Field (Vandalia-Butler site)

Since Joe dropped Tipp down to 2 teams, we are now limiting registration to 2 teams per school so that we can get two OAC qualifiers out of this.

12 of 16 spots filled.

Benjamin Logan
Lakota West
Northmont
Parkway (x2)
St. Charles (x2)
Sidney (x2)
Tippecanoe (x2)
Vandalia-Butler

Teams who have expressed interest and I think are coming, just waiting on confirmation:
Kenton Ridge
Beavercreek
Possibly a second team from Lakota West

Current field of schools at Olmsted Falls High School (NE):

Olmsted Falls X 2
Beachwood X 2
Solon X 2
Westlake X 1
North Olmsted X 1
Monroeville X 1
St. John and Paul X 2
Orange X 2
Kenston X 1

That means 14 slots are taken. I have a few others that have shown interest. I know that I can field a 3rd team if needed.
Steven--any word on possible readers from CWRU?
This board has really been quiet...
From the list that you posted I have not heard from Elyria Catholic or St. Ignatius (I sent them direct information).
ANY READERS ARE WELCOME! (Hint)
Thanks,
~Rhonna

Rhonna,

If getting readers is proving problematic, contact the coaches of the teams that are coming and ask if they don't mind reading for you at the tournament. You should be able to get a good deal of readers that way.

Also, Lei, South Range is good to go.

University School would like to field a team or two (not sure how many yet) for the FKT at either Case or Olmsted Falls.

Does anyone have practice NAQT packets they could email me?

We will definitely be coming; we are just not sure how many teams we can bring.

Unfortunately, NAQT doesn't allow their packets to be traded or shared between teams. However, they do make a couple of sample packet available at http://www.naqt.com/samples/

Also, you can go to quizbowlpackets.com and look at any of the HSAPQ packets they have there to give you an idea of good toss-up / bonus questions. There are alot of other good questions on there to read too, but I know the HSAPQ are generally of high quality.

Just about everything on Quizbowlpackets.com is superior to any NAQT packets outside of HSNCT packets you could practice on. I'd suggest those HSAPQ questions, Hunter's Prison Bowl, and any PACE NSC packet.

Hi AJ-
Olmsted Falls is the NE site. Case is not hosting FKT (their team is going to Toronto that weekend). If you are sure you will be attending, I need some information from you and a registration form (I can email it to you). Currently we have 16 teams confirmed and I think we will see if we can get 24. We need eight teams per bracket for the bracket winners to receive a birth to regionals. If you will be bringing more than one team, you will need to bring a reader. You can be that reader if you want. We would love to have you! Let me know.

NE field as of today:
OFHS-X 2
Beachwood X 2
Solon X 2
Westlake X 2
N. Olmsted X 1
Monroeville X 1
St. John and Paul X 2
Kenston X 1
St. Ed's X 1
Edit: Orange X 2
We have 16. The next to register will be in the third bracket (if we get another Cool. University above sounds like they will have at least one or more and I know I can field a third team, I was just waiting to see if we filled the first 16 so winners of the brackets will be regional qualifiers. Each of the teams entering more than one team will be bringing a reader which will be extremely helpful. I have a few others that have shown interest but have not confirmed as of now.
I did not know if any of the teams in the NW will be coming our way or if they are going south.
Thanks,
Rhonna

One of our coaches registered yesterday, so we will send a team.

Does anyone have any tips for doing well?

Study lists to make sure you get everything at least by the giveaway clues at the end...

Read old packets as much as possible - either at practice or to yourself.

You can find these at:

www.quizbowlpackets.com
quizbowl.stanford.edu/archive

The FKT will be more like novice/jv sets, so if you see those, those would be your best bet to practice on. Not saying that practicing normal sets would ever hurt.

Bob, et al.
After editing several of the FKT packets, there is only one or two that I would deem JV/early season material. The rest of them contain some easy questions, but also some more difficult material (IS set and above at times). Therefore, studying standard IS sets (or anything from a mid-season tournament) might be a good idea. I think the writers got away from the idea a little bit, to the point where the editors would be re-writing large tiers of questions to edit them down.

I think the general rule of thumb is to study a tier above the level you will be competing on. So basically anything on www.quizbowlpackets.com not designated as Novice would be good study material.

I think the writers might have seen the "Difficulty: IS Level" and that caused them to get away from the easy-ish, early tournament level initially considered for FKT. I know for the few questions I wrote, some of them were on material that looking back on it, might be a little above that intended level.

I hope the answers I wrote questions for weren't too hard. I didn't think they were, and I did make an effort to select easy answer choices.

North East stacks up as follows:
OFHS-X 2
Beachwood X 2
Solon X 2
Westlake X 2
N. Olmsted X 1
Monroeville X 1
St. John and Paul X 2
Kenston X 1
St. Ed's X 1
Orange X 2
University X 1
Northeast X 1
Hawkin X 1
St. Joseph X 1
Copley X 1

If necessary, I can field a third team and Beachwood has offered to do the same. That leaves us one team shy of 24.
I have 11 readers confirmed not counting any from Case (hint--we talked about my picking up a few if we could provide transportation...).
I was amazed at the teams that showed interest to Lei's initial email but did not even respond back when I emailed them the details...
So, we still have room is there is interest on any teams part that has not contacted me. We have commitment of 11 buzzers...still need one more...
I think it's actually coming together quite nicely!
Thanks,
Rhonna

I found the same thing Rhonna. We are at 12 teams in WC (not surprised we are less than NE). However, almost all teams who are coming were recruited by me. When I contacted those folks who responded to Lei, they either 1) never returned an email or 2) said they were coming and have since backed out.

I desperately want to get 4 more teams (from schools other than those registered) so that we can have 2 8-team divisions and 2 OAC regional qualifiers. I have emails out to everyone I know this side of the state, but have been getting no responses (including from teams like Fisher). Frustrating- I have more teams enrolled in my December tournament than this one!!! So, if anyone knows a lonely quiz bowl team in western or central Ohio with nothing to do on October 3rd, send them my way.

David,
I think the timing of the FKT is probably what is hurting us. Fall sports/activities take their toll on Academic Teams. Add homecoming and the fall play and you have disaster. If it is attempted again next year, my suggestion would be for the beginning of November. Many teams do not even hold their organizational meeting until after the fall sports/activities season.

The teams that responded to Lei...I sent them individual emails (not bulk to a list like the rest of the correspondance) and not even a "get lost"...just a void of nothing! Sad (One exception--North Olmsted)

Unlike those of us on this board, many teams have not had their organizational meeting yet. On Bob's advice (thank you, Bob), once we came back from ACE Camp, we practiced all summer. Most schools have not had a practice yet.

And then there are the budgetary issues that most of the schools are facing (including us!)

I hope you get the 4 teams that you need and I pray we get one more so that I don't have to turn away 7 teams (actually, I would probably run the last bracket for the "B" teams and "C" teams with no OAC birth from the third bracket because they would only have 6 matches instead of 7 (or maybe I could have have them play 7 but they would have to play one team a second time).
Good Luck!

Perhaps your middle school can field a team to plug the hole, if all else fails?

BTW--
I have not seen any of the question sets for FKT--how is the scoring? 15/10/-5? 10/-5?

Sorry; schoolwork and job fairs piled up rather quickly and I couldn't find any time to do anything else for the last week. My apologies for not posting an update earlier.

Yes, scoring is ACF standard, and, of course, no powers (as Bob intended).

A few packets have been sent out to the sites; please start making copies of them, and I will start sending out more and more packets as I finish editing them. I am waiting on one last person to submit his packet in (he was notified on a very late notice) but his packet would require minimal editing (mostly formatting) and could be sent out very quickly.

Counting completed/almost completed packets, we have seven so far.

I will be available all day October 3rd if you need any last-minute assistance.

So, like, do you need more questions or anything?? Won't be much of a tournament with only seven packets. I imagine some sites will want to have some sort of playoffs/finals/etc past the initial round robin.

Sorry; I meant that we have seven completed so far. I can definitely count on one more coming in and I will compile another packet with all the spare questions lying around, giving us nine total. With some luck (and lots of time), I can provide a tenth one as well. It's possible that you may not be able to form 8-team brackets. Please take note.

Not quite clear at this point...
Maybe I just don't understand how to set up my brackets, but with 8 teams in a bracket you need 7 sets of questions to complete the rounds. I will have 24 teams, so I will take the winner from each bracket and the best finisher from the second place teams and have a four team playoff. That means I need one set for the semi-finals and one set for the finals, bringing the number of sets to 9.
Did I figure this correctly, or did I misunderstand?

Please advise.

No, you figured right. This is probably the best way to determine a winner given 9 packets, unless you do some sort of power matching, swiss pairing, or something similar. Of course, this leaves you with no leftover questions (besides any leftovers from individual packets) in the case of screw ups, so it would probably be good to compile a half packet of extra questions or something in case this happens.
