| err Quakers are pascifists - I used them as an example to illustrate the idea that force could be used to overthrow a peaceful practice. |

| In my experience Quakers are brilliant - it's like a religion, but without any of the, erm...religious practices. But that might just be the Quakers I know. |

I've not been giving the responses the attention they deserved, mainly cos I was busy in the run-up to Christmas, and frankly couldn't be arsed! But anyway, little bit more time now, so here goes, however but before I get stuck in, may I just say, the article was written not totally seriously, in some parts it is even less serious than in others. I would say I am an athiest, but to be really serious in this article, I would have to be agnostic, or lapsed Jew, Muslim or Christian.
| Quote: | | They would claim that God is as you highlight a divine entity and therefore in his nature is superior to us mere humans. That we fail to comprehend God is not his fault, it is just that us humans are inadequate, this is the same reason why we cant understand his masterplan, the reason bad things happen. I think about it as if he told us our heads would explode. God lives in another realm of reality and can see things we cannot. This is retreating to the lands of mysticism, but some would claim, these are the very reasons we cannot apply the same kind of accountability on this divine entity as we could to a human leader. |
Right, and we should believe we can't understand him/her/it because? Seems like a cop-out to me, the kind of excuse I'd come with if I didn't want people understanding or questionning me too much. They say we can't understand God when we question him, so we shouldn't. Yet God himself/herself/itself doesn't actually make things any clearer, well not in any useful way anyway. You also point out my use of man in my original article, I wasn't saying God was man, heaven forbid, I was saying we can use the same approach.
| Quote: | | It seems to me some people can just accept this. They cant accept that something exists which they cannot understand. In the past i have been annoyed as i find this incredibly small minded, that you cant think outside your own box so to speak. However, I have come to accept over the past year that peoples brains probably function in different ways (as a result of societal factors probably) I could never agree with a facist on so many things, when you get to the root of the disagreement you often find the dichotomy comes from unavoidable clashes of attitude. I think we have a similar case, in this regard, with different views of religion. (Im not calling anyone a fasicst, that was a irrelevant example) |
You could argue religious people actually think the same way. They can't understand the universe, can't understand that it is nearly infinate, and that there is no overall meaning to it, so they need God to make sense of it all, because apparently believing in an-all-powerful divine being you can't understand is easier than believing in a universe you can't understand.
| Quote: | On the other hand many people find the idea of a god more rational then the idea that the universe we percive exists as a fluke. (On facebook i define myself as agnostic because for me this is the case)
So in conclusion of this point, some people can percieve a literally all powerful God and others cant. But that is how the dude upstairs is defined by the Christian churches. |
Since when was God ever rational? Sticking his nose in everyone's business, having a heaven and a hell, to punish or reward people, sounds like the biggest control freak alive to me. Sending your son (if we're taking the Christian viewpoint) to die, is not rational it's downright lunacy, someone should have sent social services round long ago, something wrong there. And to say nothing about magically impregnating married women, poor Joseph....
| Quote: | | As god is all-powerful hes the only one really suitable for God |
That's what he wants you to think....
| Quote: | | I dont know if abolshing religion will solve problems.... And it will be great seeing the Thought Police swoop on a bunch of quakers! But then again if it was Anne Robinson you could do some damage! |
Who said anything about abolising religion, people could worship me if they wanted, I just would rather they didn't, you'd be confusing me with my predocessor, he/she/it was the one who had a massive army of church minions telling everyone what to believe.
| Quote: | | I think your point here is satire. |
Ladies and Gentlemen, I think he's got it!
Thank you for your response higuy, glad to see someone is willing to have a discussion, although I think at times you took me a little too seriously.... _________________ Big Brother is watching YOU! |

Good choice of words - there'll be none of this forbidding when I'm God. |

The other day I learnt that someone I met here in Germany is a Quaker, and from what she said of them they seem to have similarities to P&P in some ways, and she'd know she's a member of P&P at her uni in Britain. (Yeah she's British before anyone gets confused, doing her year abroad like me.) _________________ Big Brother is watching YOU! |
