Subway's not good food though - it's just a variant on the 'crap, overpriced sarnies' theme, and presumably we'll have no control whatsoever over what food they serve - if they think there's no money in providing a good range of alternatives (veggie, vegan, kosher, halal, etc.), then we presumably won't get them.
Slightly off-the-wall suggestion, but why not have Guild retail outlets (including what is currently Spar) run by a workers co-op, maybe made up of graduates from the Uni? It'd provide brilliant 'real-world' business experience for graduates (improving that all-important employability), but more importantly it might make them more responsive to students, more committed to making the Guild a place where people want to stay and have a good lunch and socialise, it might improve the ethical standards (I'm particularly thinking of the current situation with Fairtrade at the Uni, which is, quite frankly, a joke), and it would make things feel a bit less like the Guild is being farmed out to corporations, and instead is being run BY students, FOR students. |

| We do have a graduate bar manager role already, and a fair few permanent staff are ex-students, so there is clearly a space for steven's idea. Shame there isn't a Student Employability Officer to take it forward lol |

yeah, that really is an awesome idea.
i think we need to get some kind of independant food place, something like one of the cafe places on bristol road, but run by a graduate or suchlike.
i dunno how we'd suggest stevens idea tho. but it is a great scheme.
the only problem is that the if the uni dont want to provide catering but dont want the guild to get it from anywhere else then that leaves the guild in a bit of a pickle. with no catering at all except shit spar sarnies that all taste of egg.
ok, rant over.

yeah their shit is full of salt, apart from the leafy stuff. you can't salt that otherwise it goes all soggy and limp. we shouldn't be complaining about the unhealthiness though, if people want to eat shit food then let them. i just feel sorry for the poor bastard that's paid for the franchise. it's the worst way to make a living, and the hardest franchise in fast food. at least he/she's managed to get one on campus...
..although i still stand by what i said about the campus crowd not being a captive audience.

Subway's contract is for five years according to our VPFS, so nothing's happening there for ages; but Spar only have a one year contract. Need to ask a few more questions before I know what, if anything, we can do about it, but I'll try and find out over the holidays. |

Is the subway contract signed and sealed? Or is there some wiggle room? I am thinking esp since it is so delayed, and uni are being their usual arsey self. Still upset that this decision was made high up without any obvious consultation with students. Our Guild, my a**e. _________________ Big Brother is watching YOU! |

Of course they will claim that 'consultation' did take place. Apparently it was in a 'strategic plan' passed by council at the end of last academic year. _________________ "...a society that believes in nothing is particularly frightened by people who believe in anything." Probably the part in reserved business, which we weren't allowed to see. I certainly don't remember seeing the whole strategic plan! _________________ Big Brother is watching YOU! |

Hello all
The situation is that a decision was taken in July to accept an offer from Subway. They will operate from the Foodcourt area for 5 years. The Guild retains use of the seating area.
The University aren't against us having Subway at all and we have received a lot of support from the Director of Retail during the past year. Delays have occured due to very legal things relating to ownership and use of space. If anyone has any burning questions about the specifics, please feel free to ask the VPFS at s.francis@bugs.bham.ac.uk.
I like Steven's idea but don't agree that this is a priority for the Guild. Operating any commercial activity must return money for us to invest in achieving our charitable objects - of academic representation, social interaction and supporting societies. This is exactly what happens with our Venues activity. Anything which kept money within itself and did not contribute towards the Guild's objects would be illegal for us to persue.
I don't think that sandwiches are our priority, so if someone else can meet that demand by students, then I am more than happy for them to do it. I don't think that private business is the enemy - we simply can't do every transactional thing that students want because there are enough shops out there already but there will only ever be one thing that supports student development and academic representation and that's us.
sorry about that intervention in the middle of the holidays.
and i really do think that the Conservative Future blog thing is tragic. If any of them want to speak to me about policy at some point, I'm more than happy though...
