Prime Minister Gordon Brow has insisted that all public buildings should fly the national flag and is encouraging business and private citizens to do the same. Should the Guild oblige and fly the flag? Or would such a move appear threatening to BME students because of the flags previous 'hijacking' by the racist BNP/NF etc?

As well as the the hijacking issue, the Guild represents many students. Many students, such as myself, do not buy into the whole flag-waving jingoistic mentality, and feel that the Blitz spirit is not best response to terrorism; that the west has had a large part in fueling and even creating. _________________ Big Brother is watching YOU!

| If the MechEng building can have a fascist power symbol proudly emblazoned on its front, I don't see how anyone could see a Union Flag as racist. |

Well, frankly it shouldn't really. The only difference with that is that it's part of the building, and the history of the building, therefore harder to change/remove than a flag. _________________ Big Brother is watching YOU! |

Have a look next time you're on campus. I tried to find a photo once and couldn't, so I took one. But now I can't find what I did with it, so you'll have to wait! |

If someone 'hijacks' something, you take it back. You don't just let them drive off into the sunset with it.
Withdrawing into a ghetto of political correctness just adds fuel to the dissatisfaction that the BNP and NF feed off for their own ends. |

if i thought it was necessary to reclaim the flag from fascists, which i don't, i'm not sure it would matter whether or not the guild flies it.
the vast majority of people are able to see that a union flag does not denote racism and xenophobia, and the few that aren't make me far more inclined to fly it anyway. |
