Posted: Tue Feb 28, 2006 11:05 pm Post subject: Issue 5 Funding Crisis!!! |
|
|
As it stands we are f**k re: paying for Issue 5: Not a penny in the bank; only debt.
Could I make a request that any readers/website users who support us consider digging into their pockets? When I say this I only mean relatively tiny contributions like 50p or a 」1: obviously a lot more if you like. Unfortunately it costs...
I'm sure there will be an issue 5. Even if we only fund a couple of hundred copies from our own pockets.
Dissertations, Assignments, Guild Elections, etc are getting in the way big time! As they affect a lot of the 'Grand High Commision of The Radish'.
Please Help.
Could anyone from the Grand High Commission with any time devote a little of it to this crisis of Funds, it is a truly fundamental issue!

| Matt - John owes me a tenner - if you can get that off him that can be my contribution to the Radish, as this website provides me with so much amusement during the day. |

I'd suggest that anyone who manages to collect doinations bring them to the editors meeting 5pm this Mon (6th March). However, if this isn't conveinient then Private Message me or mail the engage@theradish.org.uk e-mail address & we'll work something out.
Nice 1 Paul, that def means we can get 80 copies of issue 5. Plus I'll make another donation & I'm sure others will too.
Hwr, what we really need is a fundraiser, maybe a 360 gig???? TC's????
Maybe split the profits???? _________________ If you try to make the world a better place then there痴 a strong chance that you値l suffer and probably feel that you have failed. However, if you do not try then you値l certainly fail and will definitely suffer! As will those that you want to help! |

| Yeah, a 360 gig would be a good idea I think, although we're not booking anymore gigs until May now - from March 24th we're not gigging til the beginning of May - resting up/writing/recording etc.... in the middle of something like 12 gigs in 3 weeks so we're taking a bit of a break. |

Sid Here, with a possible solution to our funding woes.
Right now there are lots of students campaining for Guild Elections
with ripe juicy 」70 campain budgets to spend, now of course you may
be wondering how all this cash floating about can be used to fund the
Radish, and so was I, however the answer was presented to me by Tom
Goff, in his second email to candidates.
| Quote: |
1. "Student Publications"
...
If such publications would like to give candidates an opportunity to
feature, in
an unedited advert form, such publications are encouraged to approach
Elections
Committee who will contact all the candidates to inform them about
such an
opportunity. No candidate may be denied such opportunity.
|
This paragraph opens up a excellent possibility, that is the Radish
could offer all candidates the chance to buy adverts in issue 5 of
the Radish which will come out on the 9th, the day polls open.
This could easily generate enough money to print issue 5 with a
possibility of having cash left over or even of printing a 12 page
issue.
Here is a proposal for a letter to the Elections Committee from the
Radish:
Dear Elections Commitee
The Radish would like to invite all candidates in the forthcoming
elections to purchase advertising space in the next issue of The
Radish (Birmingham Universitys Alternative Press). Issue 5 will be
released on Thursday the 9th of march (the day that polls open on
Edgbaston campus)
All candidates who purchase space will be guaranteed to have any
advert that falls within the election committees rules printed in
issue 5 unedited, all adverts will clearly be labeled as adverts and
as such not endorsed by the Radish.
Adverts will be priced at <???> per 1/4 page/CM^2.
We acknowledge all costs come from campain budget and so either
recipts will be issued, or we can forward invoices to the elections
commitee for payment.
All adverts to be sent to engage@theradish.org and in addition a
posting made on the articles page of http://theradish.org.uk in line
with our editorial policy. Either submited directly from candidates
or through the elections commitee.
The Radish Team.
<???>pricing details
theres 2 options here, either the old directly proportionate to
printing costs, or of fixing it at an arbitary price, eg 」10 1/4
page. Bearing in mind some candidates will only have a bit left from
thier budget and some candidates have 」50 - 」60 pounds left and may
want to buy a full page, or possibly we could even charge per CM^2
with maybe a minimum size. Also there is a possibility to have a
limit to 1/4 page or something so we can say all candidate will have
an equal opportunity to contribute.
<>
If we agree on the prices, possibly after asking candidates how much
they would be wiling to pay and then contact elections commitee as
soon as possible. If we price the adverts too high then elections
commitee may discount it as if some candidates have already spent
most of thier budgets they wont be able to afford it, but 」10-」15 per
1/4 page would seem like a good starting point.
anyway, it would be best to get this proposal to elections committee
as soon as possible. |

Hey Gabs,
Did you post the proposal out to TG? _________________ If you try to make the world a better place then there痴 a strong chance that you値l suffer and probably feel that you have failed. Yep. Emailed Tom Goff and asked him to forward on details of this to all election candidates. Due to time constraints there wasn't time to consult fully about it but a few of us agreed that 」12.50/quarter page was appropriate. I also mentioned that candidates with special requirements (ie. larger or smaller adverts, different size or whatever) should contact us through the same engage@ email address. Didn't make any substantial changes to the letter template above.
I'll chase him up tomorrow to make sure he received it and follows up on it. |

Nice 1 dude.
I've allerted as many candidates as poss. As it stands Me, Vlad, John, Nick, Sid & Boyan have confirmed that we will be buying at least a quarter page (predictable suspects). Others have also expressed interest. Might we consider selling even smaller adverts for cheaper, as there are some candidates who have already allocated their budgets and I want to give them the largest opportunity poss to contribute.
Oh, I've also approached Scruffy & Peter M to make article contributions (based on their counter arguments (posted as comments) to Jimmy's piece if they wish. I am hoping for a strong election theme...

Its not ideal and means that we probably wont get anyone other than us lot. Dont know if we would have done anyway but still its annoying. He said he was sending out a general email after elections committee on Friday which it would be included with. Noone get anything? |
