Week 2 of the league is in the books. A couple of games in the JV division have not been reported yet and should be tomorrow. Just for fun, I decided to calculate the point differential for each team, and those figures are appended to the standings. I'm just curious to see if this will yield any valuable information.
I want to thank Zach Pace from U Buffalo who came down today to give me a hand with the feature match (Western Reserve @ Campbell). That made my life a lot easier!
Week 3 should be a dandy--Boardman and West Branch (currently tied for second in the first division) will be going head-to-head. So will South Range and Canfield, in a repeat of last year's county championship matchup. Western Reserve will defend the only perfect record in the second division at home vs. Early College, while Jackson-Milton will host the feature match vs. Youngstown East. _________________ Paul Nelson

A new feature in which I rank the teams each week to chart direction and provide comments.
Power Rankings--Week 2 (Jan. 18 )
1. South Range (4-0, First Division): After Week 2, Brianna from SR has more powers (11) than any other team put together (Boardman has 9, Sebring has 8 ).
2. Boardman (3-1, First Division): Showed some weakness in dropping the second game vs. Sebring, but still an undeniable second-place in the league early on.
3. West Branch (3-1, First Division): They don't have the best stats and they've been very lucky in getting to 3-1, but three wins are three wins, and West Branch is off to their best start in anyone's memory.
4. Poland (2-2, First Division): Seven powers, a 13.45 PPB conversion, and a trip to the finals bracket at the Harding tournament show this team has the potential for more.
5. Lowellville (2-2, First Division): Lowellville's sturdy start vs. Canfield in Week 1 got turned around in two brutal beatings by South Range.
6. Sebring (2-2, First Division): Sebring lives or dies by Wyatt Grindley, who has been slightly uneven thus far. Freshman George Clark is off to an impressive start (31 PPG).
7. Western Reserve (4-0, Second Division): Western Reserve is by far the class of the Second Division, showing it with two decent wins over Campbell in Week 2's feature. WR has the two highest scorers in the Second Division in Carrissa and Hannah.
8. Canfield (0-4, First Division): The defending county champions are winless and their numbers are weak, but they would beat all but maybe Western Reserve in the Second Division.
9. Columbiana (0-4, First Division): For Columbiana, the stats are nothing but bad. Columbiana's JV has been outscored almost as much in four games this season (-865) as they were in all 14 games last season (-1020)
10. Springfield (3-1, Second Division): Springfield is off to a strong start after being relegated, but their PPB (6.67) leaves them vulnerable.
11. Youngstown Early College (1-0-1, Second Division): Hats off to YEC for tying for second place in the Second Division! A win and a tie vs. Chaney is an improvement. YEC's JV currently leads the division.
12. Jackson-Milton (2-2, Second Division): Two losses vs. Western Reserve in Week 1 were balanced by two wins over MCCTC. No idea yet where this team is headed.
13. Campbell (1-3, Second Division): A stout opening win vs. East (220-90) has been followed by three straight losses. Derek has the third-highest average in the Second Division.
14. East (1-3, Second Division): For most teams, a 1-3 start and 76 PPG would be dismal, but for East, it's an improvement. East leads the Second in powers (5).
15. Chaney (1-2-1, Second Division): A split vs. Springfield in Week 1 and a tie with Early College in Week 2 reveal a very uneven team. Their PPB (less than 5) is dismal and they have the most negs in the Second (6).
16. MCCTC (0-2, Second Division): 32 PPG is not going to get it done, even in this year's weakened Second. _________________ Paul Nelson

Power Rankings--Week 3 (Jan. 25)
1. (LW: 1) South Range (6-0, First Division): To prove their dominance of the league, Brianna and Christian made history vs. Canfield last week by playing the first-ever double 100-point game in league history.
2. (LW: 2) Boardman (5-1, First Division): Not to be outdone, Jimmy Tancabel and Andrew put up a dual 85-point game vs. West Branch. Meanwhile, Mike from Boardman's JV is ranked in the top two in overall scoring.
3. (LW: 5) Lowellville (3-3, First Division): A split vs. Poland is a net win for Lowellville, as Travis Beatty fought the powers machine of Poland to a standstill.
4. (LW: 4) Poland (3-3, First Division): In six games, Poland continues to rack up powers (12) and negs (19) at astounding rates.
5. (LW: 6) Sebring (3-3, First Division): A split vs. Columbiana was a very good showing for Sebring, who played without Wyatt Grindley last week. Freshman George Clark stepped up, scoring 120 points (1-11-1) in two games.
6. (LW: 3) West Branch (3-3, First Division): A very good move by West Branch to move Fritzie Schlueter from JV to Varsity. Fritzie has outscored star senior Luke Price 100-75 in the past two weeks.
7. (LW: 9) Columbiana (1-5, First Division): Columbiana showed signs of life with two strong scores vs. Sebring, earning a much-needed win to stave off automatic relegation.
8. (LW: 7) Western Reserve (6-0, Second Division): Western Reserve asserted their dominance of the Second Division with two strong matches over Early College. Hannah put up 85 points in the more difficult second match.
9. (LW: Canfield (0-6, First Division): It's becoming increasingly clear that the Columbiana @ Canfield feature match on February 1 will determine seedings for relegation.
10. (LW: 10) Springfield (5-1, Second Division): A sweep of MCCTC gives Springfield a 2.5 game lead over Chaney for 2nd place in the Second.
11: (LW: 12) Jackson-Milton (2-4, Second Division): J-M showed some strength in Game 1 vs. East, but lost Game 2 on the last question.
12. (LW: 11) Youngstown Early College (1-2-1, Second Division): The early promise for YEC was lost in two nasty losses vs. Western Reserve, but their bonus conversion (third-highest in the Second) gives them a fighting chance.
13. (LW: 13) Campbell (2-4, Second Division): Campbell player Evangelos, a Greek immigrant with some potential, found his mark in Game 1 vs. Chaney, scoring 55 points, topping his previous season best of 10.
14. (LW: 15) Chaney (2-3-1, Second Division): Three weeks and three split matches for Chaney. Their bonus conversion is still weak (5.94 PPB), but they have 31 10's, only seven behind Springfield.
15. (LW: 14) East (2-4, Second Division): East earned a much-needed win over J-M, but they looked rather anemic.
16. (LW: 16) MCCTC (0-4, Second Division): MCCTC scored a combined 50 points in two matches vs. Springfield. _________________ Paul Nelson

The First Division burst open a little today, with Lowellville splitting vs. second-place Boardman and Sebring missing a tie vs. South Range on the last question. In the Second Division, Western Reserve swept Springfield, and Jackson-Milton swept Chaney, so 2nd place is now up for grabs.

Power Rankings--Week 4 (Feb. 1)
1. (LW: 1) South Range (8-0, First Division): Brianna Prislipsky is on track for 36 powers, which would edge out Jarret Greene's league record of 35 from 2010.
2. (LW: 2) Boardman (6-2, First Division): Boardman's hold on 2nd place was loosened by a split vs. Lowellville, but their Week 5 match vs. South Range could upset the balance.
3. (LW: 3) Lowellville (4-4, First Division): Lowellville's split vs. Boardman gives them a chance if they can maintain their momentum.
4. (LW: 4) Poland (5-3, First Division): In the race for second, Poland picked up steam in Week 4, putting up their best score of the season (340) vs. Columbiana.
5. (LW: 7) Western Reserve (8-0, Second Division): A decisive sweep of 2nd place Springfield gives Western Reserve a three-game lead in the Second. WR is averaging 70 PPG more than any other team in the Second.
6. (LW: 5) Sebring (3-5, First Division): Sebring missed a tie vs. South Range on the last question, but their record belies the talent on this team.
7. (LW: 8 ) Columbiana (1-7, First Division): Columbiana showed more improvement, nearly picking up a win vs. Poland and putting up their best two-game showing of the season
8. (LW: 6) West Branch (4-4, First Division): West Branch's run in the First Division is running out of steam as WB split vs. Canfield, but WB have enough strength to maintain their position
9. (LW: 9) Canfield (1-7, First Division): Canfield's win over West Branch sets up a relegation showdown in Week 5 vs. Columbiana.
10: (LW: 11) Jackson-Milton (4-4, Second Division): Jackson-Milton is picking up momentum at the right time. A sweep over Chaney puts them in a tie for 2nd and the right to play for promotion.
11. (LW: 10) Springfield (5-3, Second Division): Springfield's two losses vs. Western Reserve jeopardizes their hold on 2nd in the Second with two matches vs. Jackson-Milton left to play in Week 6.
12. (LW: 15) East (4-4, Second Division): A sweep over Early College puts them at .500 and in the hunt for 2nd. At the halfway point, East has more wins (4) than they had all of last season (3).
13. (LW: 12) Youngstown Early College (1-4-1, Second Division): Early College remains the surprise of the JV divisions, with only one loss at the midpoint of the season. Their match vs. Campbell in Week 6 will likely decide the JV Second Division.
14. (LW: 13) Campbell (4-4, Second Division): Campbell's sweep vs. MCCTC puts them at 4-4 and only a game behind 2nd place.
15. (LW: 15) Chaney (2-5-1, Second Division): Chaney lost both games to Jackson-Milton by a combined total of 20 points, but two losses really don't help.
16. (LW: 16) MCCTC (0-6, Second Division): MCCTC put up a decent showing vs. Campbell despite another sweep to remain winless. _________________ Paul Nelson

Power Rankings--Week 5 (Feb. 9)
1. (LW: 1) South Range (10-0, First Division): The only bad news for South Range is the fact they can't play two teams at once and win the county title that much quicker. SR can clinch the championship by sweeping @ Columbiana in Week 6.
2. (LW: 4) Poland (7-3, First Division): Poland has steadily improved over the last three weeks and suddenly find themselves in second place.
3. (LW: 2) Boardman (6-4, First Division): Two losses @ South Range essentially eliminate Boardman's chances at winning the county title.
4. (LW: 3) Lowellville (5-5, First Division): Lowellville got another hard-earned split @ Sebring, but they will have to sweep their last four games if they want to make a run for second place.
5. (LW: 5) Western Reserve (10-0, Second Division): Western Reserve can clinch the Second Division in Week 6 by sweeping @ Chaney, and in all likelihood, WR will phone in the rest of the season.
6. (LW: 5) Sebring (4-6, First Division): Another week, another confusing split for Sebring, who need to at least split with Canfield in Week 7 to stay afloat.
7. (LW: 9) Canfield (3-7, First Division): Will the real Canfield please stand up? Previously 1-7 Canfield hung an astounding 410 points in Game 1 vs. Columbiana. Two more wins put Canfield in a position to avoid a relegation game.
8: (LW: 10) Jackson-Milton (7-3, Second Division): Greg Domino's players are suddenly firing on all cylinders, outscoring the dominant Western Reserve in Week 5. J-M can clinch second place by sweeping Springfield in Week 6.
9. (LW: 8 ) West Branch (4-6, First Division): Having lost five of their last six, West Branch is treading water at a bad time--they stand only one game out of a relegation spot.
10. (LW: 7) Columbiana (1-9, First Division): Another increase in scoring turned out not to be enough for Columbiana, who now appear almost certain to be relegated to the Second Division.
11. (LW: 11) Springfield (5-5, Second Division): Two weeks ago, Springfield was firmly in second and crusing toward a promotion game. Now they're in third and sinking fast, having lost their last four.
12. (LW: 12) East (4-6, Second Division): East got swept badly by Western Reserve, but East has already overcome a huge hurdle this season. East has a good chance of finishing over .500, which would give them some badly-needed momentum for 2013.
13. (LW: 13) Youngstown Early College (3-4-1, Second Division): An unlikely sweep over Springfield has reenergized Early College's season. A sweep vs. Campbell in Week 6 might allow YEC to finish above .500.
14. (LW: 14) Campbell (4-6, Second Division): Two losses to Jackson-Milton put a dent in Campbell's season; upcoming matchups vs. Early COllege and Springfield could allow Campbell's season to be salvaged or turn into a disaster.
15. (LW: 15) Chaney (4-5-1, Second Division): A sweep over MCCTC puts Chaney within striking distance of their first-ever .500 season. However, they face the juggernaut that is Western Reserve in Week 6.
16. (LW: 16) MCCTC (0-8, Second Division): 3.5 games behind EVERYONE with four games to play. The 2012 league season cannot end soon enough for MCCTC. _________________ Paul Nelson

With Paul away from the computer, I humbly submit the Week 6 standings and scenarios for Week 7...
Varsity First Division
South Range, 12-0 -- CHAMPIONS -- v West Branch
Boardman, 8-4 v Poland
Poland, 7-5 v Boardman
Lowellville, 7-5 v Columbiana
Sebring, 6-6 v Canfield
West Branch, 4-8 v South Range
Canfield, 3-9 v Sebring
Columbiana, 1-11 v Lowellville
Boardman can finish second with two wins or a win and a draw against Poland.
Poland could finish outright second with a sweep of Boardman and if Lowellville does not sweep Columbiana.
Lowellville can only claim second place outright if Poland wins one game against Boardman and the other ends in a draw while Lowellville sweeps Columbiana.
Sebring will qualify to HSNCT with a draw or win in either game against Canfield. They could finish as high as third or as low as sixth; Sebring are safe in the first division for 2013.
Any of Boardman, Poland, Lowellville, or Sebring could finish in fifth. Any tie for fourth and fifth must be played off.
West Branch can only fall to seventh if Canfield sweeps Sebring. If West Branch is swept and Canfield splits with Sebring, that creates a tie for 7th that must be played off. West Branch could also tie for 5th if they sweep South Range and Sebring is swept by Canfield. That tie could stand or be played off.
Canfield must get any draw or win against Sebring to guarantee avoiding last place.
Columbiana would have to sweep Lowellville and Canfield be swept by Sebring to force a playoff for last place. Any draw or loss in their matches this week consigns them to the Second Division automatically for 2013.
Varsity Second Division
Western Reserve, 10-2 v MCCTC
Jackson-Milton, 9-3 v Early College
Chaney, 6-5-1 v East
Campbell, 6-6 v Springfield
Springfield, 5-7 v Campbell
East, 4-6 v Chaney
Early College, 3-6-1 v Jackson-Milton
MCCTC, 0-8 v Western Reserve
MCCTC has matches to make up v East and Early College.
Western Reserve will win the Second Division and gain automatic promotion to the First Division for 2013 with two wins against MCCTC. They cannot finish lower than second.
Jackson-Milton can win the Second Division if they win both games against Early College and Western Reserve does not win both games against MCCTC. If both teams end with the same record, then that tie must be played off. Jackson-Milton can finish no lower than second.
Chaney will clinch third with two wins against East, but could finish as low as seventh if they lose both games and other results go against them.
All other teams aside from MCCTC have the chance to finish anywhere between third and eighth. Any tie for fourth and fifth would need to be played off.
MCCTC can only climb as high as fifth if they win out.
Time to pack my bags and head back to the USA; JV standings will have to wait. _________________ Greg Bossick -- Chairman of the OAC |
