if i thought it was necessary to reclaim the flag from fascists, which i don't, i'm not sure it would matter whether or not the guild flies it.
the vast majority of people are able to see that a union flag does not denote racism and xenophobia, and the few that aren't make me far more inclined to fly it anyway.

As part of my new role with Friends of the Earth (for which I'm not getting paid, so don't be too happy for me), I'm very much pushing the Big Ask campaign, which is calling for a stronger climate bill. The draft from the government isn't strong enough - we want an 80% reduction in CO2 emissions (3% a yaer until 2050), annual reports to hold government to account, and to include aviation and shipping in the total targets.

FoE have helpfully created an online form to help you submit your response to the draft bill nice and easily - it can be found, along with more info, at http://www.foe.co.uk/campaigns/climate/press_for_change/climate_bill/.

It would be a great help to the world if you could take ten minutes out of your day to put your thoughts down (if you haven't already) and send this off, so we can let the government know that we want serious action. The idea is then to work on getting MPs to support individual amendments to the bill to achieve these strengthenings.

Birmingham is a great city - as good as any outside london

Personally I disagree. Birmingham is nowhere near as good for going out and most musical sub genres / scenes as any other major city outside London. I prefer Bristol, Manchester, Leeds, and Nottingham, also the uni itself is overrated.

Having said that i have really enjoyed my time here at the Uni and the cliche really is true - it's what you make of it. Some things may not be as thriving as you hoped, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy what there is, or even do something about it.

As for Brum being a dangerous place, i don't think you have anything to worry about. Unless you go looking for trouble you won't find it. As a student, your biggest worry should be burglary and theft, and any student area will always be a magnet for that sort of thing so Brum is no worse than anywhere else.

You could be right. But because peoples debt is going to be getting greater it means that their loans are going to take longer to repay - therefore meaning that the govt will still be short of cash. But I'm not sure I'm following your logic really anyway. Then theres the people that emigrate and therefore don't pay their loans back.
Or do you want a labour economics analysis of why people go into education?

There was some discussion about the BAE/Saudi investigation being dropped, but my 'glourious leader' got heavily beaten back by Tony far too easily. This is the first I've heard of actual charging, but I've not had my ear to the ground on, well much other than the vital arena of Guild politics recently...

Let's send the IT guy a link to this thread and ask him if he would post his plans and perspective. Actually, I'm going to do that now.

Simon's email wrote:

You may be aware of the unofficial University of Birmingham message board at http://www.theradish.org.uk/. We've been having a discussion on use of free and open source software at the Guild, and a few people have been considering the idea of writing a Guild Council motion in order to steer Guild IT policy more in that direction. There are a number of opinions either way but we seem to have reached a bit of a consensus towards the end of a thread.

It'd be great if you could take some time to read through the thread and post your thoughts on the matter, both from your perspective and with regard to current IT policy. We've decided to hold back on the motion for the moment.
