The 8th edition of the Cloverleaf Invitational Academic Challenge Tournament will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Cloverleaf High School. It will be OAC format. For information email Cameron Flint: cameron.flint@cloverleaflocal.org
I MAY host a fall NAQT event, if there is enough interest. If you are a coach that would consider traveling to southern Medina county for a NAQT event in the fall, email me so I can get a "polling" of interest. _________________ Cameron Flint

I don't know what the dates are for OAC Regionals and States. Surely if anyone knows or knows when that gets established, I can add them in. I am curious if History Bowl Nat's are going to conflict at all with OAC or not.
I'm going to assume that Copley's holding their OAC event on February 23rd, since thats the last weekend in February, but I'll let someone who knows more confirm/deny that. NAQT States obviously isn't on there since I don't think a host nor date has been released. I'm wondering if NHBB Ohio "State Championship" is going to be February 9th since they've been held in February the two years it has existed as a tournament, but I'll let Greg fill us in there.
Per the West Virginia quiz bowl site; theres a place allotted for the schedule for events in WV for the 2012-2013 season, but its blank at the moment. Since some teams in Ohio attend tournaments there, I figure it'll be worth putting them on the calendar when the dates are released. Since there are a few quiz bowlers from across the country to my knowledge attending Carnegie Mellon University next year, I'm going to bet they'll host Mellon Bowl again. The University of Pittsburgh will probably host SAGACITY in the fall and Battle of the Burgh in the spring. I don't want to sound negative towards either club, and while it appears that they do a fine job (though fine might be relative, I've only attended one of these tournaments in Pittsburgh before) of getting teams a lot of games, they time their matches. I don't think this would be such a bad thing but there was a game at the most recent Mellon Bowl that only had 12 tossups read in standard NAQT timing, and a game at SAGACITY had 13 read, while there are several more that had 14 read. Battle of the Burgh only featured 13 teams from eight different schools last year, this probably had something to do with the fact it got hosted on Easter Weekend.
Bowling Green I'm going to assume will run their A-set tournament too, which apparently is no longer timed but ran on 24/24 (if thats really much better than having a multitude of games with <15 tossups read like in years past).
EDIT: I added in the Golden Shamrock and the city/state info for the tournaments (while this may be necessary for the coaches that use the board since I think most everyone is pretty familiar with where everyone is).
Also, between Solon's two-day and NHBB Nationals, there are eight open weekends (actually, there's seven if you take away Easter Weekend). I'm going to bet the NAQT State Championship tournament will be hosted sometime between February 17th and April 20th.[/b] _________________ Tom Moore

Tom, Any word from Mike or Lynn about the date for the Golden Shamrock? I had figured it would be October 27 since that seems to be weekend it usually falls on, but wasn't sure. _________________ David Jones

Mr. Jones, I actually just talked to Mike about this today before I saw your post. Yes, October 27th is going to be the Golden Shamrock.
On a related note, Fisher Catholic High School is hosting our OAC formatted Golden Shamrock. Come if you would like to play at a school that doesn't have a library, but has a delicious lunch buffet. An added bonus; depending on how big the tournament will be, I would suspect there might be a game in the gym (that is if girls basketball doesn't get penciled in first). Come and look at the paintings of castles and sailboats on the walls and the big white spaces where our academic team banners used to be. _________________ Tom Moore

To answer the question above about the mirror of the Northmont tournament- yes, the tournament will be mirrored at Warren G. Harding on the same date. Also, Joe Czupryn and I are working with Cortney Bird up in NW Ohio to see if we can get the tournament mirrored up there as well to get some NW teams some exposure to pyramidal quiz bowl before regionals.
Also, the WC site for FKT is confirmed at Sidney HS. _________________ David Jones

| The Sept. 29th tournament is an Individual tournament, not invitational. Students compete in teams, but the names of all students entered will be put into a bowl where the first four names drawn will form the first, the next four drawn will be the second team etc. The winning team members each receive a $25 gift certificate as does the top scorer. The fee is $5 per student, so a school may bring any number of students to compete. All money left after expenses will go to Charity. Solon will make no money on this event which is for fun, a good pre-season practice and a chance to play with students from other schools. |

An update on the various Ohio History Bowl events...
The northeast event will run on October 27. After Boardman had told me that they could not run on the same weekend as last year due to building conflicts, Western Reserve stepped up to host, but could only do so on October 27. As they are planning to make food and use this as a fundraiser to let their team to do things (which would be a first), I'm sticking with them as host and with this date. I realize that this conflicts with both Aurora and Fisher Catholic, but I don't think we'll be stealing any teams from Golden Shamrock. For those that normally go to Aurora, I would ask them to consider the quality of questions they will receive at one site over another, and remind them that there will be myriad additional opportunities to qualify for OAC regionals over the rest of the season via league play, Copley, other OAC and non-OAC events, while History Bowl events are the only way to qualify for History Bowl Nationals.
Southwest Ohio will run on December 15 at Madeira High School near Cincinnati. I would say that this is the first pyramidal event to be held in Cincy for nearly 8 years, except that Madeira will also mirror FKT on the first weekend in October. Madeira is coached by a blood relation of mine, and while you may cry nepotism, if it brings the Cincy circuit back to life, I think that's an acceptable end for these means. There are no conflicts with any Ohio tournaments that I'm aware of on that date.
The Ohio State History Bowl is currently scheduled for January 26 at The Ohio State University. However, because of the conflict with Cloverleaf, I am working towards moving the tournament to a school that has not participated before (Reynoldsburg), again by using blood connections there. If that were to fail, I'd be open to moving it to another school, but if no site will agree to run on Feb 9, then I will stick to the Jan 26 OSU date and site. Feb 9 is NAQT SCT, which I know OSU will bid on and, most likely, receive.
If someone who can edit the post would, please update the calendar reflecting these dates. Thanks. _________________ Greg Bossick |

I think that's what Tom was alluding to -- if another network would pick it up or not...
I wouldn't hold my breath though on that one.
Time for some former qb players in central/southern Ohio to start a new quiz show and bring in Westfield as a sponsor... _________________ Bob Kilner

In the Know is a tv show that runs on WOSU-TV, the PBS affiliate for Columbus, and Westfield sponsors that. The field I believe stretches out as far west as like, Logan, Greene, and Clark Counties, as south as the Ohio river (Scioto County is the westernmost river-bordered county that has teams participate), out to like Zanesville area (I know Coshocton participates) and I think the furthest north team they've had participate was Mansfield or Mt. Vernon.
In The Know only televises like a third of the games in the tournament, if I'm correct, and the top eight teams get in the money. The questions are sub-optimal in my opinion, even when considering it's a television show, where question quality expectations can be sorta dimmed down. Anagrams, biography, "name the pop singer from the picture", and 30-20-10 questions composing a decent percent of the questions on the show, which I think gets annoying. _________________ Tom Moore

| The quiz team at BGSU has just received funding for our annual NAQT tournament for Sat. November 17th. As of now, it's safe to say that we will be running a tournament on that day. |

I thought OSU was running the FKT in Columbus, but it has to be the weekend after everyone else because of a home football game. At least that's what I remember.

Still awaiting final confirmation from Dublin Scioto's coach, but hopefully we'll be ok to host there on the 6th. _________________ Jarret Greene

The fall OAC Board Meeting is when the Regionals and State OAC dates are set. So, yes Tom, you will find out after the board meeting. _________________ Rhonna Smith

OAC Regionals will be on April 20th, and OAC State will be on May 4th.
This dates avoid both History Bowl Nationals and Science Olympiad State (both on April 27th). _________________ Joe Czupryn

Good news. Jarret and I have come to an agreement that will move History Bowl to March 2 at OSU. This should avoid all conflicts, I hope. The official website won't be updated until the rooms are reserved, but I wanted to let everyone know. Thanks for your patience. _________________ Greg Bossick |
