The mere fact that you can buy custom artwork from the games marketplace, means that this game is to me - way too 'commercial' in it's revenue structure and socioeconomic patterns of new game development strategies.
So that means that any rich kid could buy the game and a position of strategic political power so strong that they would basically be a 'Kingpin or Mafia Boss', and most likely be untouchable or at least unbeatable unless you spent as much money as they did to get what they have to even the odds.
Or had been playing the game for so long and had so many experience points and armor or health that you would be a worthy advisary, who had already spend a lot of money just to be online - and are the best of your class in strategy or knowledge of the game.

Realtime Worlds Points are a virtual currency that you can buy, right here, for cash.
You can spend these RTW Points on lots of cool stuff, including gametime. It costs 280 Points for a 20 hour chunk (which never expires), and just 400 Points gets you unlimited access for 30 days.
You can also use RTW Points to buy and sell unique, customized items in the game's marketplace.
Buy 200 Points

Buy 400 Points
$9.99
Buy 600 Points
$14.99
Buy 1400 Points
$34.99
Buy 2600 Points
$64.99 |
I really wish they hadn't used this particular game to introduce the gaming public to the newest incarnation of game commercialism.
Although, I'm sure there will be other similar games in time, that will have a different means revenue - so players don't have to pay through the nose just to have a bit of fun.

Yeah! and how often is that going to happen? Maybe 5% of their customer player base?
So, artists who can make awesome content don't have to pay to play? Bull! it takes time to think of and make awesome content, and sometimes money spent on purchased models, backgrounds and texture packs that they didn't create themselves. _________________ http://www.gamefront.com/files/user/likemikes/

"When you say 'active content', what exactly are you referring to?"
Essentially: You pay a fee, and the game you are paying to play is actively updated periodically with new content. Be it characters, items, vehicles, quests, general content etc. WoW does this for instance, and does it very well.
I think what you're addressing is Free to Play MMO's. Or F2P for short. Actually, F2P games in general really.
F2P's marketplace systems are usually based on a premises called 'Pay for Power', basically they have a type of in-game credit, you buy it with credit cards/game cards purchased at local retailers.
"So that means that any rich kid could buy the game and a position of strategic political power so strong that they would basically be a 'Kingpin or Mafia Boss', and most likely be untouchable or at least unbeatable unless you spent as much money as they did to get what they have to even the odds."
Not quite, PFP is usually like a shortcut, you pay using ingame credit/credit card and you get the best stuff in the game, usually. Sometimes it's just special mounts, other times you can trade the game credit for ingame cash and then buy the best stuff from player shops. At the worst, you can just buy the best items from the ingame cash shop.
Sometimes you can obtain the same things for free, but the time and effort it would take is extensive. Hence using shortcut as a term. You can eventually reach a PFP player's level/gear/money with time.
Such is the major downfall of F2P games. Pay for Power sucks. But PFP is usually balanced enough that there is no 'Kingpin' player so to say. Still sucks though.
But yeah as stated, In my opinion they(P2P's) are justified. F2P's are entertaining for a few levels but eventually you hit a cap they place where you go from F2P to PFP player and once you hit that cap and don't transition, the game ceases to be fun for you.
Anyways, seeing as I'm poor, I probably won't be getting this anytime soon. I'm saving for Brink/Black Ops/Portal 2 etc. _________________

It looks like an adobe(flash) interface. _________________ http://www.gamefront.com/files/user/likemikes/

Black ops will be developed by a different company then MW2. Treyarch is doing it this time, there will be dedi servers but we can only hope for no commando/painkiller ect. |
