Granted! I haven't read all of the content in those links, but it does relate to this discussion.

Although I haven't been able to find references to the court cases in question yet, I'm sure they are valid - and because I don't take what my friend MJ says lightly, since I don't have access to the 'UTAN Unreal Admin Forums' where he got that info from - I cannot fully qualify in all certainty that the cases are still going forward.

But, what prompted the alliance between UTAN & The Clan Base was Epic's UT3 CBP Maps including content from user (Clan) maps without proper permission.
Seeing as how Epic has already done this before with licensed (copyrighted) content from it's own developers of UT2K4 for inclusion into UT3 without the content owners permission, who knows what they'll use next!
I wonder if they had permission from the creators of all this content? Unreal Tournament 3 to ship with dozens of multiplayer maps.

Something to watch for in UT3, more fights over Clan content without permission from the creators of 2K4 content.

Basically, UTAN won't ban you for hosting Epic owned content on your server. Unless it's copyrighted by a license holder. (Even then I doubt action will be taken.)

So I 'spose just keep deleting everything in your map and don't rebuild lol.
There are other ways to protect custom content, such as setting it to be serverside only

I agree!, but some may surprise you with valid arguments! :P

All in all, it's nothing short of a hassle trying to protect your hard work - but if you don't take the necessary steps, anyone with a connection can download it and use it for whatever they want.

There is also another thread that mentions this stuff, I'll try and find it again.

Any content created with the Unreal Editor is owned by Epic games under the EULA.

In order to copyright something you've made with Ued, I believe you need to buy a license.

Basically, UTAN won't ban you for hosting Epic owned content on your server. Unless it's copyrighted by a license holder. (Even then I doubt action will be taken.)

I recall a tiff between a guy named Sgt.Muffin and another named Wolfness, The latter using PWC build maps and editing them without permission. Ultimately Muffin mentioned legal action but nothing was done. (What court is going to take a case like that? I've never heard of a court case involving content on a gaming server. Basically my point is not much can be done about asswipes using your hard work. Your pretty much S.O.L.)

I got it straight from the horses mouth so to speak!

A word of warning about the new 'Clan Manager', it's now hooked into UTAN and the UT2004 Clan Base Site!

So, if the mutator finds any protected clan content in your UT directories and your not a member of the Clan Base(ie. a registered member - requiring a small fee) it will report your server to UTAN and get it banned from connecting to the main servers.

Just so you guys that want to run personal servers with any other clans content without their permission, be forewarned! Because as soon as the server initializes the mutator and it finds something questionable it'll tell on you.

Nobody likes to get banned(UNIVERSAL UTAN BANNED) and have to get a new CPU-ID / Game or CDKey / ISP-IP / Router or anything else having to cost you money to play again.

All thanks to the idiots that are porting UT2K4 stuff to UT3 without asking permission from the original owners of the content.

If you ask me they should be HOG TIED AND BUSH WACKED TIL THEY BLEED!
